Common Stinging Insects in Our Area

• Yellowjackets: Yellow jackets are the most common wasps in Georgia. They are very aggressive and cause painful stings. Yellowjackets are often found in tree hollows, attics, wall voids, and roof soffits. 
• Bald-faced hornets: These are the most aggressive hornets. Bald-faced hornets are black with white or yellow markings. Their paper nests are often found attached to homes, porch ceilings, trees, and other structures. They attack in large numbers, causing painful stings and possible anaphylaxis. 
• Paper wasps: This type of wasp is not as aggressive as others but will attack if provoked or threatened. Their nests are often found on window frames, deck railings, and roof soffits. 
• Carpenter bees: Carpenter bees burrow into wood structures to lay their eggs. A drone or two is left near the site as a lookout. They look similar to bumble bees, but don’t be fooled. Carpenter bees can cause damage to homes, sheds, garages, wood decks, wood lawn furniture, and playground equipment.
